Drimnin House

Jutting into the Atlantic but sheltered between Ardnamurchan to the north and the Isle of Mull to the south, Drimnin House sits within 7,000 acres at the western tip of the little-known Morvern peninsula – one of Scotland’s best kept secrets. Drimnin House lies at the end of the public road, undisturbed by traffic and a haven for wildlife, with stunning views over the Sound of Mull toDrimnin House Hall Staircasewards Tobermory.

Drimnin House was built in the eccentric neo-gothic style and dates from about 1850. An earlier house, which stood on the same spot, was destroyed by fire in 1849 when the Estate was owned by the Gordon family. Extending over three floors it has some thirty rooms, including eight bedrooms and reception rooms with stunning views over the Sound of Mull. The top floor originally provided accommodation for servants and a Catholic chapel which once replaced the chapel which now stands on the shore below the house. To the rear is a housekeeper’s cottage named after Ena, the last resident housekeeper. This now provides additional self-catered holiday accommodation and is used by Drimnin House staff.

The house boasts stunning, high-ceilinged rooms, intricate faux marble, floral wall paintings and ornate cornices, which had originally been installed by the leading Edinburgh decorator, D.R.Hay. Following a complete renovation, it has been transformed into a warm, luxurious and environmentally-friendly home. Much of the furniture dates from the mid-nineteenth century, and at least one piece bears the charred marks of the 1849 fire.  The garden includes an original Victorian parterre and is sheltered by the house on one side, the old farm buildings on another - now home to the award-winning Nc'nean Distillery - and cliffs at the rear.

Drimnin House is available for family holidays and special occasions such as weddings, vow renewals, christenings, corporate activities, country pursuits and film sets.  Drimnin House is a family home and guests are encouraged to treat the house as their home, to relax and enjoy all that the house, gardens, Estate and surrounding area has to offer. Due to its remote location at the end of this quiet peninsula, Drimnin House is also popular with visitors who are looking for holiday accommodation that gives them the privacy that may not be possible in more well known holiday destinations on the west coast of Scotland.

Children are welcome, and dogs are welcome by prior arrangement, at an additional cost of £20 per dog per week.

My family LOVED every minute of every day

'We had a family gathering of 21 people and 4 generations, aged 2 to 79! The main house has been meticulously renovated and restored to it's former glory by the Lewises. To say that my family LOVED every minute of every day of the week we spent in and on the Estate is to understate our joy at being together in SUCH a magical place! Louise Lewis and her wonderful staff could not possibly have been more generous and accommodating. They went out of their way to to be both helpful when needed and yet allowing us privacy for our family games, singing, and fun. The meals were served buffet, we ate in the beautifully appointed dining room, had cocktails, afternoon tea, and after-dinner coffee in the equally beautiful drawing room overlooking the Sound of Mull. The impossibly romantic sunsets were a nightly adventure. The main bedrooms were princely, comfortable and very clean and beautifully appointed. All the bathrooms were spic and span clean, as well as being up-to-date and functioning perfectly. We explored the estate, engaged with a local artist, came to know the estate manager, some local musicians. Side trips to The Isle of Mull, exploring Tobermorey and other areas, were highlights. Long walks about the estate, archery, shooting, croquet, touring the distillery, visiting the "lost villages" and the restored Chapel, one intrepid member of the family even swam in the Sound, doing jigsaw puzzles, card games, learning to play Snooker, dancing in the main hall and playing "Murder" in the evenings were all ways in which we were able to amuse ourselves and each other during our magical week at Drimnin House.
I/We simply cannot recommend a stay here strongly enough!'

We appreciated all the trouble you went to to make our stay so enjoyable including putting beautiful flowers in the bedrooms and on the tables, preparing delicious meals and checking we were warm enough.  We found plenty of easy parking, beautiful views, hot water at all times, everything working efficiently and so much more.  This is what made your house so special. Thank you.”
